Our client for this site was a Staff Sergeant in the United States Air Force has has a great love for barbecuing and grilling. He wanted a site that reflected both, as suggested by the site name. Knowing that this was a personal blog website, we wanted to give our client as much space as possible to put his own stamp on it. That lead us to a three column design. The three column design leaves plenty of room for the main content so the client could write to his whims, but still leave room in the sidebars to add little things like the weather where he lives, his tweets and other things that interest him that he wanted posted in more permanent locations.
We looked at a variety of freely available WordPress themes, and settled on one the has three columns, with what appears to be a lightbox effect for the content area, that was widget ready to make use of WordPress plugins.
The first part we worked on was the logo. It was a natural to pair up the subdued stripes with flames. Since the site title stretches the full width of the header, we chose an open typeface so that the logo background wouldn’t be covered up by the site title.
The camouflage background tile was another no brainer given the site title. It took a bit of work to make the tile to be flawlessly seamless, but it was worth the time and effort to get it right since USAF camouflage uniforms from the 1980s and 1990s use repeating elements.
